more closet cleaning

I don't like these sketchbooks. I think they are annoying. I used to think I would like them, because they are pocket-sized, but something about the small size of paper and large ringed binding makes them very uncomfortable for me. There are not many good sketches in these, but here's a handful I thought I'd hang on to. In chronological order...

Some people in the chapel at my college. This is when all girls had the same hairstyle, just pull back the two sides and put some kind of clip in the back. Then poof up your bangs. Floofy bow optional.

My roommate Kaori studying with her hair sticking straight up in a clip... this style was for inside-dorm wear only.

Dr. Gladin (my sociology professor) and a guy named Yo.

A couple of sketches out of the window of the lobby of the Bausch & Lomb building in Rochester. George used to work there. For a while we were sharing a car. I was probably sitting in there waiting to drive him home.

This guy was the speaker at a church in Nantucket. We took a vacation there for about a week when my brother was working there, and we had a free place to stay. Maybe Chuck remembers who this guy is.

cleaning out my closet

This old sketchbook has some interesting memories in it from the 1997/1998 era.

I drew these people in the Barnes & Noble Cafe. The lady's face got smooshed.

I used to work in the same plaza as this Barnes & Noble. I remember sitting in there sketching this. I must have been really bored.

I was a volunteer at my church's AWANA program on Wednesday nights. This guy was always entertaining the kids with his "Sparky" puppet. I don't think the drawing is that good, but it's a fun memory. Here's a sketch of some folks at an indoor soccer game. They really pack the bleachers at those games.

This is my Uncle Bill. Christmas day, 1998.

I'm always drawing at Christmas cantatas.

We were at a friend's super bowl party when I drew a number of sketches of their dog, Jack.

I might keep posting these sketches as I find them. They are an interesting record of my life. And not much new is happening here these days. So this entertains me.

A comment I have about the new blogger... I have yet to understand why it is better than the old blogger. One annoying thing, I keep telling it to keep me logged in, but every day I have to sign in again.

memoirs

I went through a huge pile of files recently and came across a lot of old sketches. Here are some of them.

These days I'm usually doodling cartoons in my sketchbooks, but I used to spend more time sketching people and places. It is kind of interesting to look back on these sketches, of places and times I might never have remembered if they weren't drawn.

These are from when I had various jobs helping elderly people. The guy in the top drawing is from the "senior class," a group of people with Alzheimer's disease.

Another Senior Class member... I remember this guy was always flirting with the ladies.

I spent many long hours as a "companion." I had the idea that this job would consist of playing checkers with old folks, chatting about the good old days. Not quite, these were all people who were very angry that their families wanted someone to stay with them, and very very uninterested in me being there. These are sketches from Mrs. Waasdorp's apartment. She would watch TV all day, either the news or golf. It's a good thing I had my sketchbook.

I cleaned house and did laundry for a lady named Grace. I was sitting outside waiting for laundry to dry when I drew this. I still can't draw cars.
Grace was my favorite... she always appreciated my help. I even did some grocery shopping for her. She liked to eat sardines. Her apartment was jammed full of things ordered from the home shopping network, and piles of magazines of all kinds, all unread. All this, she claimed, was the work of the evil "lady upstairs," who ordered these things and had them all sent to Grace's apartment.

Grace said this sketch does not look like her, but actually it does. Except I made her nose too big.

Here's a sketch of the lobby in the main retirement home. I was sitting with a woman after chasing her all over the building, and she finally gave up. After I came to her apartment and said I would be with her that evening, she made a dash for it. After ten years, I can finally see the humor in this.

I guess I should post something new here.

a new phone

The time has come to say goodbye to the Nokia Tracfone I've been using for the past... five years or so? It's been replaced by this, nothing-too-fancy Motorola phone. I wanted to stick with the Tracfone plan, because buying the minutes is super cheap, seeing as I don't need a lot of minutes. And this is the only phone accepted by Tracfone that is a camera phone. So now I can take spy photos and post them here on my blog.

It's a good thing they included this warning in the directions, or somebody could have been hurt.

more winter

We have over four feet of snow right now. The roads have been treacherous. I risked my life today and went out to get some food and do a few other errands. I got myself a Starbucks double cappuccino as a reward for my bravery. And I bought some more spring flowers.

I don't think anyone will need to worry about bumping into our "tree line" for a while.

In other news, we put an ad in the paper for a free mattress, and the calls keep on coming. We were awakened at 5:15 this morning by some nincompoop wanting to know about the mattress. I don't think this person was aware of whether it was night or day.

How is everybody else's part of the world? Keeping warm?

white out

We are completely snowed in today. All the churches are closed. I don't know if anything is open... it must be a bummer for all the chicken wing & pizza places that were hoping to make a lot of money on Super Bowl Sunday.

They say it's good for one's mental health to buy some spring flowers this time of year.

Thankfully the power has not gone out, so we are toasty warm in here. I've been reading a book called "A Girl Named Zippy," and cleaning my office. And I did some shoveling for Skippy, who cannot go to the bathroom when the snow is two feet over his little head. I think that the path I made for him is all filled in again by now. It just keeps coming down today!

A Few Thoughts

I just switched to the new blogger. I need to get used to this.

Anyone visiting our house needs to watch out for the "tree line." This is holding up George's beloved willow tree that is leaning to one side after the October storm. I think we clotheslined a few delivery people before he put this sign up.

I miss pomegranates. I got sort of addicted to them and then they went out of season. They sell the seeds in a bag, but that is just not the same.

Maybe today I will clean this pile of papers off of my desk. This goes back pretty far. Hmmm... I've got some Christmas cards in here... this stuff can't be that important. Maybe I'll clean it tomorrow.

I WON I WON

I can't believe it, I won something from the Susiebadoozie contest.

This Magic towel grows. Just add water.

Now Skippy has a beach towel that's just his size.

what's up

Skippy and I are camping out at my parents' house for a while. We're getting some huge work done on our basement, waterproofing, because of a ton of leaks down there. Since I work from home, all the noise and stuff on top of Skippy barking at them would be more than I can stand. So I'm here until I get notice that they are done.

I was looking forward to getting on the road yesterday morning, with a hot cappuccino from my favorite local coffee shop. Instead I decided to go with Starbucks. Remind me not to get the vanilla latte again. It tasted too much like warm milk. We just got ourselves a Starbucks in our part of town. The girl who was supposed to wait on me yesterday morning was going on and on about a long story with her coworker friend while I stood there and waited. The manager keep giving her a look which she was completely oblivious to. I guess it's the same everywhere!

ok, here's something

Thanks to Susiebadoozie I have something to blog about. She wants to see pictures of the inside of people's cars. So here's my '99 Civic, nothing too fancy, but it gets good mileage.

I spilled Starbucks coffee on my car last week, and still need to clean it off. I love the idea of getting a coffee and then taking my dog for a walk in the park. But you'd be surprised how hard his ten little pounds can pull on the leash once I get out of the car, with coffee in my hand. I already had my coat cleaned.

happy new year and stuff

Hey, I was wondering if everyone is switching to the "new blogger." If you did, what do you think about it? I have not. I fear change.

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas. Now it's time to start writing out some resolutions.

good deed of the day

This is for everyone who keeps finding my blog looking for "micropets instructions." If you are unfortunate enough to lose your micropet's instructions, you won't know how to communicate with your micropet. So here they are, for Tug and Chop:

stuff

Last night I went Christmas shopping, but the only Christmas gift I bought was for myself! I had to have this ornament.

Also yesterday, I got a call from a card company that I sent samples to ages ago. They were interested in my cartoons some two years ago, and then I never heard from them again until yesterday. They wanted one cartoon and wanted to know if it was sold yet. I already sold that one to another company. That is the only one they wanted. Bummer!

Another thing I finished... the one and only
My Life Is A Cartoon 2007 Calendar.

happy monday

Thought of the day: Those inflatable Christmas lawn decorations should be outlawed. Every neighborhood in town is littered with half-deflated or completely deflated grinches, snowmen, santa riding a Harley...etc,etc... I need to draw a cartoon about this. I was thinking of a cartoon where Santa comes in for his landing and gets tangled up in all that garbage lit up on the rooftop.

In other news, Skippy made a new acquaintance today. He really does like her, and wants to smell her. Except she won't stand still, and he got whapped in the face by her wagging tail when he tried to sniff her butt.

This is our friends' dog, a recent shelter rescue, and she is lovely. Her eyes are not really pink and yellow. They are blue and green.

in other news...

Here's more doodles.

The line at the post office becomes very very long when this particular sweater-vested guy is working. I was in line when I doodled him.

I'm taking a day off today. I'm going to try and catch up on everyone's blogs the best I can.

Oh, and hey, I just noticed, today is my one year blogoversary.

one of the things i've been doing

Here's one of the reasons I've been an absentee blogger lately. Yesterday I was working on this for about 10 hours. It's supposed to look like the Renaissance. It's one of the backdrops for our church's Christmas program.

There are a zillion things I would change about this, but I ran out of time, so it is done.

Sleigh Security

I had a lot of fun drawing this over a year ago. Since it never sold as a card, now I've got it up on some products at Jenn's Doodle World.
