poop of the earth

My husband's first language is Russian. He often refers to Russian expressions that are similar to American ones. For example, instead of saying, "You think the world revolves around you," they would say, "You think you're the belly button of the earth." The Russian word for belly button is pronounced "poop." We will joke sometimes about somebody thinking they are the poop of the earth. Our dog thinks he is the poop of the earth.

Another one I think is funny is instead of "when pigs fly," they'd say, "when a lobster whistles on the top of a mountain."

That makes sense, because if someone thinks they are the center of the universe, they most likely act like the poop of the earth.
I'd like you to draw a cartoon of a lobster whistling at a pig as it flies over his mountain.

I think it makes sense too! It's just funny hearing the translations. What interesting conversations the 2 of you must have!

Oh this was SO funny. I really laughed over this one. How hysterical!

BTW, thanks for coming by! My mom's response to the Labelmaker post is up today.

Thanks for my morning chuckle! I live with two little girls who think they are the poop of the earth or at least this house......well, ok they are.

I for one, think that you should make an entire post out of all the sayings you can think of from your hubby. i love these sorts of things. remember that one sitcom, where the guy had a cousin from another country come to live with him, and he screwed up all the sayings of americans all the time? he called his cousin 'coesin"

I used to love that show... Perfect Strangers! I think his name was Balkey Bartukumus, although it must not be spelled quite like that.

That's pretty darn funny... and those are terrific sayings. It would be great if you could share more of them. I think that's one of the things American culture lacks today... colorful retorts.

Seeker, I will have to draw that.

Would you wear a T-shirt that says "poop of the earth" on it? Maybe as a nice gift for someone special.

you could also make t-shirts

seems like I'm always trying to get people to make t-shirts. what's wrong with me? Maybe I need to go design t-shirts........

That last comment was in response to Uncle Joe. I'm not sure why it popped up above his comment.

I really enjoyed reading your husband's Russian expressions. I recall an old Leo Kottke (vinyl) album I checked out from the library once had a track called "When Shrimps Learn To Whistle". Maybe it's the same idea (only smaller) as when lobsters do.

Blogger says, "gijoq". Is that, like, one of the guys on the Army football team?

foo, interesting... I'll see if I can find that title in Russian, maybe it's mistranslated.

I found that Leo Kottke CD on Amazon... George would love that guitar music. I should have gotten him that for his birthday... even better would be a DVD.
