When people say a dog is either "show quality" or "pet quality" I wonder how that must make the dog feel. My dog had a few homes before he came to enjoy his life of luxury here with us. The last person who owned him gave him to a breeder to sell him. She told us he's "only pet quality" because he's too big for a Pomeranian. We tell him all the time that he should be the standard for Poms because he is so beautiful.

You're right, the dogs should judge the people. That could be a cartoon.

the first dog we had the privilege to share our house with was something we call a "crossroad". you know the kind where you know the Mom has been out - probably where several roads meet and had fun with the first stud she could find. We have no idea who the father was, but the Mom was a collie. The son had NO resemlance to a collie. We called him Donkey since we had no idea how big he would end up...
Years ago, when I was five or six, my parents bought a Dalmatian puppy from a breeder. He was papered and had national show winners for parents. Unfortunately (or fortunately) for him, he didn't have enough spots. Instead of a gruling show life, he was my first and best friend for over 15 years. I miss him.

Show quality vs. pet quality?
somehow I just got reminded of the verse in the Bible that says something like, "Whatever is first on earth will last in heaven". Pet quality is evidently heaven for our pooches.
My dog has all kinds of feelings.
Your dog would probably hide because he knows you'll be mad, even if you never hurt him, he doesn't like it if you're mad. I'm sure he's sorry.
